Introducing Food Miles

The concept I’m currently calling ‘Food Miles’ would offer field trips and other guided journeys (principally by foot, but involving other means of transport as required/requested) that use food as a point of connection to explore a place, a landscape, a city, a community, a region. These wouldn’t be overtly ‘gourmet’ tours providing some idealised version of Scotland’s larder, nor ‘foraging’ trips learning about specific edible plants, but instead journeys lasting a few hours or a few days where the very natural human instincts for eating and moving on foot are entwined to allow participants to explore places and people, landscapes and lives, ideas and challenges. The food we’ll encounter will be good, but even more it will be interesting, connected, thought-provoking, stimulating and revealing. The miles we’ll cover needn’t be strenuous, but they’ll be rich and rewarding.

Food is fundamental, fun, frightening and far-reaching
